Charles Schwab Challenge 2023
The Charles Schwab Challenge is one of the oldest and most prestigious events on the PGA Tour, dating back to 1946. It is held at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, a par 70 course that measures 7,209 yards and has hosted some of the greatest names in golf history.
The course is a classic test of golf that rewards accuracy, strategy and creativity. It is not a bomber’s paradise, but rather a place where players have to shape their shots, control their distances and navigate the tricky winds that can swirl around the tree-lined fairways and greens.
The course plays as one of the toughest on tour, averaging +0.24 over par in the last five years. It has the third smallest average landing zones when combining fairway width (28 yards) and greens (5,000 square feet), making it imperative to hit the ball in the right spots.
One of the most challenging stretches of the course is the “Horrible Horseshoe”, a trio of holes from #3 to #5 that average +0.49 over par since 2003. The third hole is a long par 4 that doglegs to the right and requires a precise tee shot and a long iron to a well-guarded green. The fourth hole is a brutal par 3 that measures 247 yards and often plays into the wind. The fifth hole is another long par 4 that doglegs to the left and has a narrow fairway and a sloping green.
The course also features two par 5s, one of which is reachable in two for most players (#1), and four par 3s that are all over 190 yards. The greens are bentgrass, fast and small, making them difficult to hit and putt on.
The Charles Schwab Challenge is a tournament that tests every aspect of a player’s game and requires patience, discipline and skill. It is a true showcase of golf at its finest.
