the Memorial Tournament 2023

Article of the Memorial Tournament 2023. Preview, thoughts on the market, betting picks and model and updates on AI Challenge.
Chairman's note: the assistants and many members seem to be having a summer break so we are producing less written notes here. In addition we are waiting for the updates for the models we so much like to use to make it as easy as possible to pick winners. Last few weeks has been really bad and thus we are limiting our bets this week.

The Memorial Tournament is one of the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour calendar. The tournament is held annually at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The course is known for its challenging layout and difficult greens. This year’s tournament will be held from June 1-4.

Muirfield Village is known for its challenging layout and difficult greens. The course has some of the toughest Par 3s, Par 4s and Par 5s on Tour. The rough penalty margin (RPM) is 8% higher than average, and chipping from short grass/fairway areas is the hardest on Tour with only a 44% scramble rate. However, putting is much easier than average in every single category.

The most important metrics at Muirfield Village compared to the average Tour course are:

  • Lowest “Missed Fairway” GIR% from any non-major course on Tour at 39%
  • AVG approach distance 191 yards
  • 4th furthest Proximity when Going For the Green on Par 5s

With multiple reports calling the greens the firmest they have seen in years…scoring will be minimal.

Chairman vs. AI's (section started 13.4.2023)

So starting few weeks back, we thought it would be a fun way to track the advancements in AI (more specifically Bing, powered by GPT 4 and ChatGPT/Personal.AI, powered by GPT 3.5 / copied golf data).

It's a simple exercise of predicting top5 for every tournament and you get 1 point for correct players and 2 points for a winner.

Points after May:

Chairman: 11 points (Scheffler from PGA)
Bing AI: 7 points
ChatGPT: 4 points

Chairman's picks:
1.Scottie Scheffler 2. Patrick Cantlay 3. Jon Rahm 4. Xander Schauffele 5.Rory McIlroy

Bing's picks:
1. Rory McIlroy 2. Jon Rahm 3. Justin Thomas 4. Jordan Spieth 5. Scottie Scheffler

ChatGPT's picks (excluding players playing in LIV or injured):
1. Billy Horschel 2. Patrick Cantlay 3. Jon Rahm 4. Jason Dufner 5. Max Homa

Betting card and few thoughts

Since it's been quite busy in life outside the golf market I haven't really followed the market, but it seems that this is once again a top dog race and it might be the best way to approach the week. I ended up picking the one with value left and sprinkled some on the course horses and trending players. Additionally I took few lines to be placed in-play which you can see on the last rows - the odds on the last column is the one I put to the ticket and if it fills during first round - I'll ride it.

We are researching a simpler ways to approach the market and next week we might end up on a short side after a while. It just seems to be easier to pinpoint 5-10 players from top 30 who will not win.

All in all, take it easy this week and enjoy the best in show play a really hard course.
